1949

The trip to Yokosuka was uneventful. After we arrived, things began to pick up a bit.
In response to our message asking if they were ready for us to relieve them, the ST. PAUL
hoisted a great big "affirm," just about six times the usual size; they were ready to go home!
On the eighth day of November we became the flag ship of Commander Seventh Task Fleet
Vice Admiral RUSSELL S. BERKEY, USN.

Many of the crew were making their first liberty in an oriental port and they were out to make
the most of it. Souvenirs began to come aboard in all sizes and shapes. Kimonos, silk pajamas,
Japanese type shoes, fishing rods, toy board, dolls, parasols, fans, pearls, and other articles
too numerous to mention, much of it being sent back to families and friends for Christmas gifts.
It is said that the draft aft increased by a foot.

Perhaps one of the most remembered features of Yokosuka is the EM Club, reputed to be
the finest in the Pacific. The club offers fine entertainment for everyone. It has a snack bar
where sandwiches and soft drinks may be purchased. The bar is decorated with bamboo
sidings and murals. The jungle room, which adjoins the bar, offers soft music and a quiet place
to eat and drink. There is a patio just outside the snack bar. Taxi dances, which give the men
a chance to dance with Japanese girls, are often held. A good band is al-ways at hand to
provide music. The theatre at the club has first rate pictures every night and occasionally a
stage show. The library next to the theatre is usually decorated with fresh flowers. There is
an out-door roller skating rink which is seldom used in winter because of the bad weather.
However, Yokosuka offered just a taste of what was to come.
