1960 - 1961

Dignitaries galore crossed our brows during the five day visit.


Rose Queen Linda Fuqua brought her lovely court
aboard for a luncheon with the bachelor officers.


Oregon Governor Mark Hatfield paid an official visit
on Admiral Melson.


Captain Abhau greeted Portland Mayor Terry Schrunk and presented him with the ship's plaque.


Over 35,000 people toured HELENA and managed to sneak a look into almost every space on the ship.
An unexpected 2,000 came to worship with us Sunday morning. 





Rose Festival officials attended a forecastle reception given by the officers of the staff and ship.












      We were entertained royally by the wonderful

people of Portland. We danced, went 

sightseeing, visited in homes, 


 Admiral Melson was knighted by Queen Linda.



The five days were over all too quickly.

We left a little tired, but with wonderful

memories and the hope that we would 

return soon.
