ESSAY CONTEST

The Prize Essay Contest of 1951 sponsored by the
U.S. Naval Institute is open to any enlisted man or
woman in the Navy. Marine Corps. or Coast Guard
on active duty, it has been learned.

A prize of not less than $300 and of not more
than $700, a gold medal, and a life membership in the
Institute will be awarded for the best essay submitted
on any subject pertaining to the Naval Profession,
should the Board of Control consider the essay to be
of sufficient merit.

Essays should not exceed 8,000 words and must be
received by the Secretary/Treasurer U.S. Naval Institute
Annapolis. Md. on or before August 1,, 1951.

FOUR OFFICERS RECIEVE WORD OF PROMOTION

One Cruiser Division THREE staff officer and
three ship's company officers have recently been promoted.

LCDR A. H. Berndston. Flag Secretary to Commander
Cruiser Division THREE has been promoted to CDR. The
HELENA officers receiving promotion are LTJG D.. J.. Diana,
Fourth Divsion Officer and LTJC E. C. Sullivan, Seventh,
Division Officer, both being promoted to Lieutenant, and

advancing to the warrant rank of Chief Electrician.

EM CLUB HUNTERS' POINT SITE
OF HELENA'S DANCE

The ship's dance held the. fifth., sixth
and thirteenth of February at the Enlisted Men's Club
in San. Francisco were attended by well over seventeen
hundred persons, of which five hundred and twenty three
were guest of the HELENA'S crew.

The three section dances marked the first that
the newly established club has been used solely by one
ship. The Club resembles many of the modern nightclubs,
consisting of a large lobby, checkroom, spacious din-
ing room, and a gaily decorated ball room.

Music was provided by Joe Brigandi and his orch­
estra. Dance contests were held through out the even-
ing and attrative prizes were awarded to the winning
couples. Drawing for a door prize was held each even-
ing. The men's prize was an all expense seventy-two
hour liberty to Yosemite National Park and the Ladies
prize was a Gruen wrist watch. The Winners from the
Helena were, R L. Phippe, FN, Easy Division, N. Jones,
CSSN, S-2 Division, and S.S. Fallero, SHSH, S-1 Div..

Refreshments, consisting of coke and plenty of
beer were served through out the evening for the thir- ­
sty dancers.

Highlights or the evening was the floor show
which presented the acrobatic dancing of Anita Jacobi,
breath taking feats of balance by the Montaynes.
At the last of the three dances, the ships company was
honored to have as a special attraction the Duncan
Sisters who put on an excellent, impromptu floor show.

Honored guest of the evening were Rear Admiral
and Mrs. R. E Libby, Captain J.W. Alles III, Captain
and Mrs A.L. Becker, Captain and Mrs. E.V. Raines and
Chaplain and Mrs E. Sneary.

Members of the ships' Recreation Committee and
other designated personnel made all preparation and
plans for the dance. Members and heads of various
committees were:
