Compartmentation-manbering and lettering
Major sections, decks, and compartments are lettered and numbered in accordance with Navy Standard
practice, as follows:

(A) Stem to'transverse bulkhead frame 65.
(B) Machinery' and boiler spaces, frame 65 to 115.
(C) Transverse bulkhead, frame 115 to stern.
All numbers in each division begin at the forward end of that division. Compartments on the
starboard side have odd numbers; those on the port side have even numbers. All compartments and
spaces that are completely bound by watertight, oiltight, airtight or funetight bulkheads are
nunbered. In a watertight compartment, sub-divided into two or more airtight or fumetight spaces
by suitable bulkheads, each sub-division is designed by a prefixed number to the compartment
designation letter. Thus, compartment A-212-L has an airtight bulkhead, dividing into two spaces
A-212-1L on the starbord side and A-212-2L on the port side.

The prefix "0" of a compartment indicates that it is above the main. deck. In general, the
first or first and second, number indicates the deck upon which the compartment is located. To
define further the contents or main use of a compartment, the compartment number is followed by
a designation letter as follows:

A - storerooms, tool and supply rooms.
B - Ships battery, turrets, etc.
C - Ship and fire control.
E - Machinery.
F - Fuel.
L - Living Space.
M - Ammunition.
T - Trunks and passages.
V - void.
W - Water Tanks.

Example; A-304-L, would be in the "A" Section of the ship, on the third deck, the second or
fourth compartment on the port side and is a living space.

Engineering;

The general arrangement of machinery provides the best military protection for all vital
equiptment. It is arranged in two groups, a forward and an after group; each group consist of two
fire rooms, with one boiler and one 750 K.W. turbo generator in each fire room and and engine room
with two turbine and gear units and all auxiliary units for independent operation. Steam supply is
so arranged that each group may be operated independently or either engine room may be supplied
from any combination of boilers in operation. Steam is furnished by four Babboek and Wilcox "M"-
type boilers which deliver steam to the main throttle at 600 psi. and 850 degrees super heat.

The main propulsion plant consists of four propeller shafts, each driven through double
reduction gears by a high pressure and a divided flow low pressure turbine. The designed total
shaft horsepower is 120,000. For economy under cruising and up to moderately high speeds, steam
is fed to a high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine in that order. At high speeds, steam is
fed directly to the high pressure turbine. In each end of each low pressure turbine casing IS
located on a steam element capable of' delivering 5,000 shaft horsepower per unit, or a total
backing power of 20,000 shaft horsepower.

The generating plant consist of four 750 K.W Turbo-generators and two 250 K. W.
emergency diesel generators and alternating current is generated and distributed as 3 phase A.C.,
440 volts throughout the ship to power units and to transformers to be reduced as necessary to
220 and 110 volts. In #2 and #3 fire rooms is a 75 K.W. direct current generator driven by a
synchronous motor. Normally one of these units will be in use for DC supply as well as for
improvement of' the AC power factor.
