Kualoa

Following our visit to the Iolani Palace the morning of Saturday, 3 December 2016, our
tour continued to the north side of Oahu. There our first stop was lunch at the Kualoa
Ranch.

As we were driving along the road to the Ranch, our tour guide was pointing out features
of the former Kualoa Army Airfield. The terrain around Kualoa, at least from my vantage
point, can be seen in the first photo. I kept wondering how could an airfield have been
built in this location.

My thinking was you had to know exactly what you were looking for in order to be able to
identify things. What I know as hardstands but might more properly be called revetments
were somewhere in there but I never spotted any. Artificial camouflage was unnecessary
as the abundant growth of trees made it quite easy to conceal the aircraft.

I never did get any photos along the way and it was not until we were at Battery Cooper
that some of this made sense.

There have been several movies filmed on the Kualoa Ranch and inside Battery Cooper
were terrain models that were used in Windtalkers. One of the pictures is blurred but
you may be able to read the descriptions in yellow naming the locations in the area.
