6 July 1952

REAL FIREWORKS FOR U.S.S. HELENA ON FOURTH OF JULY

Aboard the U.S.S. HELENA in Korean waters, July 4....Culminating 3 days and nights of almost continous firing supporting troops manning the right flank of UN line, heavy cruiser U.S.S. HELENA and destroyer U.S.S. Soley today included the Communist in a bang up 4th of July celebration. Levelling her big 8 inch guns and her 5 inch secondary batteries at town of Kosong and surrounding areas HELENA ably assisted by escorting destroyers poured high explosives into enemy installations in the area, In midst bombardment a Communist 76 MM gun opened but ships guns quickly silenced the offending battery. Over 3 day period 2 ships have destroyed 13 bunkers damaged 18 others neutralized several gun positions and damaged tunnels and communication trenches. At night they have harrassed enemy by pouring fire into his supply depots and have furnished starshell illumination when ever called for by UN troops.
