Executive Department

The Executive Department does many jobs.
The Captains Office handles much of the ship's paper work, while the Personnel Office maintains the records of 1,100 men.
The master-at-arms force and Legal Officer maintain discipline.
The Chaplain offers guidance to all.
Training, photographs, shipboard publications and public information are the concern of the Training and Education Office.

Operations Department

The Operations Department functions as the eyes and ears of the ship. Its communications section keeps contact with other ships and shore stations by radio, signal flags, and flashing light. The CIC section uses radar and other electronic devices to gather and evaluate information of use during both war and peace.

Gunnery Department

Everything from firing the 8" guns to supplying mattresses to the crew comes under the cognizance of the Gunnery Department.
Actually the Department personnel can be split into four general categories: The gunners, the fire control technicians the deck hands and the Marine guard.

Engineering Department

Visitors to the engineering spaces are often amazed at the intricate combination of steam, electrical and dieselpowered machinery
which is necessary to keep Helena moving.
The carpentry, metal, electrical, and machine shops maintain equipment and construct new items according to the ship's needs.
Damage control is another major concern of the Engineering Department.

Getting realism in abandon ship drills

Supply Department

Old Mother Hubbard would've had a bone for her dog if she had a Supply Department,
for among its many functions are the purchasing, preparations and serving of meals.
Other activities operated by the Department include the ship's store, soda fountain, cobbler shop, tailor shop, barber shop, and laundry.
The disbursing clerks with their stacks of MPC and real green money are part of the Department, also.
Not to be forgotten are the many storerooms maintained throughout the ship by the Department.

Navigation Department

Getting the ship to the proper place at the correct time is the primary job of the Navigation Department personnel.
This assignment requires maintaining an accurate fix of the ship's position. A comprehensive chart library helps keep the ship clear of dangerous waters.

Medical and Dental Departments

Got a toothache, soot in your eye, a broken arm?
Standing ready to correct these ailments and most others are the doctor, the dentist, and their enlisted assistants.
A sick bay, operating room, and complete dental equipment are among the facilities at hand to help them in their work.

Helicopter No. 24

Attached to the ship during her West Pac tour is Helicopter 2, piloted by Lt. P. E. Delaney and Lt (jg) R. K. Schultz.
The helo has proved its worth many times in transferring passengers and the greatest of all panaceas-----mail.
The helo also rescued a downed pilot while the ship was operating with Task Group 70.2.

Cartoon Frolics

In planning, first consideration must be given to the materials at hand.
