1960 - 1961

We entered the Orient through Yokosuka and tried to learn all that we could in three days
about the country which is a modern mixture of East and West. Her mighty industries rival those
of her world wide competitors and Tokyo is second to none in population and activity. At the
same time many of the old customs, costumes and culture have remained. Hundreds of little
shops and a myriad of shrines occupied the part of our attention that was not spent on the
exotic beauty of Japan's women. While we were on liberty, Admiral Melson and his staff conferred
with their counterparts on Admiral Griffin's Seventh Fleet staff and discussed matters of mutual concern.

Upon our arrival the meeting of the Fleets - First and Seventh------took place and two
days later official visits were made and returned aboard the respective flagships. For
our parts, we began liberty at the Club Alliance but soon found ourselves heading for other places.

The people, both young and old, fascinated us . . . .
at work, dressed for a traditional ceremony,
or in their homes.
