USS PHOENIX COMMISSION
A Proud HELENA Supporter
The USS Phoenix Commission is a group of citizens from
Phoenix, Arizona who have organized to maintain a community
awareness of U.S. Navy vessels.

Primarily established to strengthen the relationship between
citizens and vessels named after the City of Phoenix, the commission
established the "702 Society" and began its mission by befriending
HELENA's sister boat, USS PHOENIX (SSN 702). From these
efforts, the 702 Society established partnerships between Phoenix city
schools and submarine crewmembers.

Following the deactivation of the USS PHOENIX (SSN 702) in
1998, the Phoenix Commission continued their strong support of the
submarine community by inviting the crew of the HELENA to the
City of Phoenix and sharing their warm hospitality and countless
contributions to the community in academics and preserving Naval
history.

One of the key members of this effort was commission member
Garth Brown, a survivor of USS HELENA's (CL-50) sinking in the
South Pacific in 1943.

The Phoenix Commission and HELENA have solidified a bond
of support through several specials events, including visits to
participating Phoenix city schools, VIP cruises, and crew recognition
programs.
