Recreation means many things to many people.
On liberty and on board HELENAMEN relaxed and enjoyed a
variety of activities ranging from softball and bowling
to sunbathing and movie watching. The softball squad and the
bowling leagues held the centers of interest in both spring and fall.
With all our many tasks to perform we still found time to enjoy
ourselves and to help prove the old theory that all work and no
play makes for an unhappy and ineffective sailor.

In the spring the softball team defeated everyone in sight in the San Diego area before losing two games in Portland. These were the only losses against 22 wins, a record of which we were all quite proud.

In San Francisco the softball team finished second in league play.

The bowling league began after our return from Portland with the FLAG team capturing top honors, out-rolling OPERATIONS in the finals.

The weekly ship's bowling league was a total success as over 100 players turned out for the Thursday night action of the two circuits.
ALPHA bested the MARINES in the finals and the ship gave a party for all the league's participants as well as the softball team.

ENS Griffith and Kitson and Owens contributed their services
to the Hunter's Point football squad as assistant coach
and linemen respectively.
