After training operations in California waters, HELENA departed once more for the Far East 3 April 1948, arriving Shanghai 24 days later. Throughout the summer and fall of 1948, she operated primarily in Chinese waters returning to Long Beach December 1948.

Theodore L. Hooten joined the US Navy on 7 Feb 47. After boot camp he was assigned to the USS Helena CA-75 as a fireman. He completed the FIREMAN FIRST CLASS training and was awarded a certificate dated 5 December 1947. He received his discharge dated 24 March 1950 from RS, USNS, San Diego, CA. He re-joined the Navy on 3 November 1950 and was assigned to the USS Macon CA-132.
