Royal Hawaiian Hotel

Exterior of Royal Hawaiian Hotel

Royal Hawaiian Hotel Entrance

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was leased to the US Navy as a Rest and Recuperation Annex to the
submarine base. One source states that Officers paid $1 per night while there was no charge for
Enlisted Men.

While the hotel must have been quite visible back in WWII, today it is surrounded by large
buildings and foliage and was not easy for me to find. I ended up having to get directions from
another hotel.

For personal non-commercial use only

An internet friend of mine, John Szalay, grew up in Honolulu and is quite familiar with the entire island of Oahu.
During this year John has been my mentor and the two black and white LIFE magazine photos (above) came from him.

Towards Diamond Head

While my color photo was not taken in the exact same location as the B&W,
it does show the development along Waikiki Beach during the past 75 years.
